This is, as far as the text is concerned, one of my all-time favorite books -- as moving for me today as it was when I was a child. I bought this edition as a gift, resigning myself to doing without the superior Ward illustrations of the older edition. But now that this edition has arrived and I've had a chance to look at it, I'm actually just going to put it in the "donate" bin.

Why? The rear cover provides a plot summary that shouts out spoilers for three of the four major events of the book, including the climactic events of the final chapters. It's rather like buying an edition of "Hound of the Baskervilles" and having the rear cover say "Detective Holmes solves the riddle of the spectral hound, and shows that it was all a scheme devised by Stapleton."

The Cat Who Went to Heaven Elizabeth Coatsworth Lynd Ward 8601422396997 Books Reviews

A great book, for kids and adults, too. A Newbery Medal winner for good reason. But spoiler alert -- I wish the cat didn't have to die at the end.
I absolutely loved this book of a Japanese artist who his house keeper bought a cat with there last pennys at first the artist was kind of furious and then he saw the calico cat and at first glance loved the cat with his very cat!! )
I remember reading this book in the 4th or 5th grade and it was the first book that ever broke my heart! It's got a very sad ending, so beware! I recently shared this book with my 7 year old who loved it as well! My daughter was learning about China at school, so this was the perfect at-home-addition to her lessons. I'm not sure if it's because kids grow up faster now, but my daughter wasn't as heartborken by the ending as I was when I was as child. Either way, it's a classic book that both parent and child will enjoy!
I picked up this book at my school library when I was about 7 years old. Back then I read anything with an award sticker on the cover. Usually, I was guaranteed a good read. This book was sad and happy at the same time. I remember crying when I read it when I was little, and I even teared up now as an adult at 36. It's a bitter sweet story and it makes you appreciate the little things. I can't say exactly why I loved it except I did and still do. I think I appreciate that a children's book wasn't just about boogers or nonsense. So, if you want a good story pick this up. But the ending is very sad (and happy) but I don't recommend it for children who are too sensitive or very young.
A Newbery award winner of 1931, this book (based on an old folk tale) is a beautiful lesson in patience, compassion and kindness to all, human and animal alike.

A little humble cat (a Japanese bobtail!), rescued and brought home by the compassionate housekeeper to the home of a starving artist who does not at first welcome her -- does all she can to show how grateful she is to share the artist's home and eat her meager fish and rice diet.

When the artist sees this cat seemingly praying at the statue of the Buddha, he names the cat Good Fortune.

Soon the artist is commissioned by the temple (and given a cash advance)to create a scroll depicting the death of Buddha and the procession of animals who walk by him to convey their final respects. But because, the cat never received Buddha's blessing, the artist could not put a cat into the scroll. However, looking at Good Fortune and how kind and humble she is, his heart and his compassion get the better of him and, to Good Fortune's exceptional delight, he paints a cat into the scroll, even while knowing that by doing so, he assuredly risks losing the possibility of ever having the scroll hang in the temple.

Beauty, happiness and sadness all occured at the same time -- the beauty of the finished scroll, the utter joy shown by Good Fortune at seeing a cat in the scroll, and the double sadness, 1- Good Fortune died of Happiness (and was buried with great love and respect) -- and 2 - the monks of the temple, upon seeing the cat in the scroll, were very upset and angered. The artist knew very well that because of his compassion toward Good Fortune, he was doomed to utter poverty because no one in the village -- would ever ask for his services again, after what he painted in this scroll.

Or would they???? Read on.

Miracles happen every day. As it turns out, Good Fortune truly DID bring Good Fortune -- to herself, her artist, his housekeeper, the temple and the village.

The Cat Who Went to Heaven brings us not only beautiful illustrations, but a timeless wisdom in its message.
My son and I read this for a summer reading requirement for 6th grade. It's a very quick read and very captivating. It took me about two hours max to finish it and he finished it nearly as quick. It's on that we didn't want to put down after starting so it's good that it was short for me.
I heard about this book from another book I was reading. In it, a child repeatedly asked for it to be read to her over and over. It’s been in my “to read” list for awhile. Eighty-nine pages and very touching book about love and compassion through the eyes of an artist, his housekeeper and his cat. Includes a lot of lessons from Buddhism which I found interesting.
