Museum of Kitschy Stitches A Gallery of Notorious Knits Stitchy Mcyarnpants Books

This is the only book about crochet that I have ever purchased, and it's almost certainly the only one you'll ever need. Stitchy McYarnpants (alter-ego of computer programmer and conniving crafter Debbie Brisson) has written a book that is mind-boggling in its scope. I am not old enough to remember when some of these horrors were popular, but I am old enough to ask "what were they thinking?"

The book is loosely organized by type of mutant polyester creation, from hats (my favorite is the Polypus Mike-Nesmithicus on p. 11) to a section on "Bad Girls, Worse Outfits". That would be chapter two, and the actual title is "You Knit For Your Mama With Those Needles?"; by far my favorite item in chapter two is the cycling outfit on p.22 which answers the question "Ever wish you could have a wedgie consisting of an entire skein of your favorite yarn?" with an otherworldly outfit that "combines all the breathability of a sandwich bag with the comfort of a bear trap".

I was also particularly drawn to chapter eleven, "Handmade Toys". I hadn't had a really good nightmare in a long time. This chapter changed all that. While there are numerous atrocities to be seen, the most amusing was on p.108 in a peculiar and traumatizing display that is introduced "A monk, an elephant, an African tribesman, and an Italian waiter walk into a bar...." I can't bring myself to discuss the matter any further. If you need to know more about this particular display, you'll have to see it for yourself. Other attractions in chapter eleven are some weird psychedelic snakes (with feet?), not one but two extremely disturbing Humpty Dumpty-themed abominations, and an excellent display of "Yarn Noir" ("Dial C For Crochet").

"The Museum of Kitschy Stitches" is a masterwork of yarn-related oddities, and I recommend it highly (in spite of the nightmares) to lovers of kitsch, groovy 1960's and 1970's fashions, and anyone who loves the works of James Lileks. My hat is off to Stitchy McYarnpants, and I wish her a speedy recovery from her yarn obsession.

Museum of Kitschy Stitches A Gallery of Notorious Knits Stitchy Mcyarnpants Books Reviews

A great gift!
If you knit/crochet this will put a smile on your face. I remember when some of these were in craft magazines. All I can say is what were they thinking of.
If you crocheted granny squares in the 1970's, or know someone who did, you will laugh yourself silly. My daughter gave me this - - how did she KNOW? I bought a copy and delivered it to my best friend whose entire wardrobe growing up was knitted, sewn, or crocheted by two loving but misguided aunts in the '60's and '70's. Sometimes the best comedy is real life.
This is a series of genuine, but really tacky knitting projects from the past. I bought this for my daughter who is an avid knitter.
There are no patterns here, which may or may not be a good thing. It might be funny to re-create some of these atrocities as gag gifts. But It wears a big thin and isn't all that much book for the price.
This is one of the most hilarious books I've ever read. Stitchy has always had an uncanny way with words, but I haven't laughed this hard since reading Karen Finley's "Enough Is Enough". It's one of those books that's better when read aloud and passed around the room (people are going to be staring at you anyway as the tears roll down your cheeks while you try to suppress a gigglefit, so you might as well share).

She has a real talent for choosing the perfect clever words in response to deliciously tacky images while most of us are still standing there with our jaws dropped in disbelief. My favorite moments are the leopard potholder and the PTA outfit.

Well done, Stitchy! It's only July and I already know what everyone's getting for the holidays.
This book isn't quite what I had expected. I thought there would be a few more vintage patterns, and I expected a bit of historical knowledge about vintage patterns.
I did not expect a book with tacky, somewhat offensive jokes. This isn't my style of humor - mocking everything.
This book was so funny that even my husband -- who has never knit or crocheted in his life -- was laughing, too. Whether it was making fun of the poses of the models or the items they were wearing, I laughed so hard that I could hardly get my breath. It wasn't just that some of the items were obviously from another era and therefore outdated (ooh, did we really think granny squares were that cool in the 70s? did we really wear our hair that way in the 80s?), it was that some of the items featured were so outrageously stupid that you wonder anyone would have created them in the first place! Case in point Early in the book there is a rather nice pair of mittens with a matching hat, both knit in bold stripe patterns with jewel-tone yarns. Why did the designer decide to cover it all with little white pom-poms? I'm sure it was to emulate snow as well as to cash in on what was a current craze for pom-poms, but it still looks like (as the author writes) someone lost "the mother of all spit-ball contests."

I've shared this book with my mother, my husband, and numerous friends. Whether or not they knit, they all appreciate the humor of it.
