Slayers C J Hill Books

For years Tori has asked her parents to send her to dragon camp but they have opted for the best camps. At last Tori is going to get her chance to spend a month at dragon camp learning more about them as well as why she dreams about them. Arriving at dragon camp Tori is surprised to learn she’s not with the regular campers but with an advanced group who aren’t here just to expand their dragon craze. Soon Tori is wrapped up in a world where dragons really exist, the human existence resting on her shoulders as well as her fellow Slayers. The ones with the Dragon Knights blood in their veins that will allow them to fight them.
Only one problem Tori doesn’t have a special power but the ability to hear what the dragon hears.

The Slayers have come back every year since they were 11 years old only this year Tori is joining for the first time getting a late start. They also had two slayers not return this year so already they are short a few slayers. As Tori tries to fit into a world she only dreamed about the real danger becomes real when she overhears that the dragon eggs are close by and this may be their only chance to stop them before they hatch. Will Tori survive camp? Will they be able to stop the dragons? What about the missing slayer that Dr. B has been looking for since day one?

I like Tori she’s a rich socialite but just because she likes to dress nice and have hair doesn’t change the fact she knows what’s important. The characters are well developed I found it easy to connect with Tori and found myself cheering her on as the book went. I liked Tori right from the start, all the slayers are great characters they each have their own story as well as abilities. I’m still torn on the guy aspect for Tori we are introduced to a potential love triangle which I tend to avoid. I’m curious to see how it will play out.

I've had Slayers on my TBR list since I saw the new cover, even added a copy to my bookshelf but it got lost in the piles. I grabbed my copy off the shelf as a spur of the moment read and found myself pleasantly surprised. The concept for the dragon eggs being in hibernation mode I found interesting, it almost make you wonder if maybe there could be dragons out there. I like the way the author used history as a platform for when the Dragon Knights and Dragon Lords came from. The whole idea for Slayers is new and exciting it’s a captivating story that I had a hard time putting down. This is my first book by the author but I found her writing style enjoyable it was easy to fall into the story losing all track of time. The book is beautifully written teens as well as adults will enjoy the action packed adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seat till the very last page only to leave you wanting more. I need to pick up the next one because I’m dying to know what’s going to happen next. I really enjoyed Slayers I’m a huge dragon fan and enjoyed the unique story. I’m looking forward to checking out the other books from the author.

Slayers C J Hill Books Reviews

Dragons are real and, unlike the Disney version, they are mindless beasts who eat humans. However, there are few dragons and they can have very long gestation periods. Most humans have relegated them to the realm of myth. But now the latest eggs are preparing to hatch and slayers are being born to battle them. These Slayers are modern teenagers. The only thing they have in common is that they are descendants of the ancient knights who battled dragons to near extinction and that their pregnant mothers came near enough to a dragon egg to trigger the dormant slayer DNA in their babies.

Tori Hampton is a spoiled senator's daughter when she arrives at the camp. She has always had dreams of dragons and has always known that they were dangerous. She wrecked her father's crystal dragon collection when she was small. She has studied all the myths. She has also studied martial arts, archery, shooting, horseback riding and skating. She is smart and athletic. She has been wanting to attend this camp for several years but her parents convinced her to give other camps a try.

She is finally at dragon camp where she joins other slayers who have had the advantage of knowing what they were and training together since they were pre-teens. Tori has a hard time fitting in at first with the other teens even though two of them are hot boys who are the team captains of the two training teams. Jesse and Dirk are both convinced that Tori won't last as a Slayer. Tori isn't at all sure she even wants to try. She would rather that someone other than her be the one who has to fight dragons. Finally, her sense of duty and patriotism kick in and she gets with the program. Each Slayer has a special talent that can be used to battle dragons. Tori knows that she has exceptional hearing but that isn't one of the talents that their leader - Dr. B. - has identified. It isn't long before they realized that Tori can hear what is happening around the dragon eggs.

The few remaining dragons and dragon eggs have been preserved by a family that can link minds with the dragons and who want to use them to take over the world. Our Slayers need to stop the man in charge - Overdrake - because it looks like his plan could work. Just a few dragons over Washington, DC who are the size of large airplanes and who shoot out a field that wrecks all electronics could be enough to force the government to give in.

This story has the kids training and has them conduct a raid on the facility where Overdrake is waiting for the eggs to hatch. Along the way, Tori learns about her own talents. The group also discovers that they have a traitor in their midst who has been passing information on to Overdrake. That person's identity would be a spoiler so I won't share but his/her moral conflict between his/her duty to his/her family and duty to his/her friends was well-done.

I can't wait to read the sequel which will be coming out soon. Fans of teens who have to do heroic deeds will enjoy this story.
I'm not crazy about dragon stories. Frankly it was a miracle I made it through the Eragon series. But with Slayers, I think I've discovered a new favorite author. The characters are exceptionally likable with realistic motivation. The dialogue and narrator's voice is filled with dry humor that makes me embarrass myself in public. (I laugh... just in case you were thinking I wet myself.) And the supernatural aspects of the story are presented in an understated way that makes them seem almost real. Now for the girly stuff. Being a self-proclaimed romance phobe, I usually roll my eyes at teenage "passion." But since Tori is decidedly not one of those irrational schizophrenic types, and the love interests are ultra not-boring and are three-dimensional to boot, I found myself giggling like a Twihard. I've already purchased book 2, so if I don't answer my phone or email, you'll know why.
