For the past couple of months, Abbey has done everything she can to reclaim her sanity and get over Caspian. Not even living with her Aunt Marjorie on her farm can prepare Abbey for what she feels when she returns home. Abbey is constantly haunted by disturbing dreams and to tries to fool herself into thinking she's normal, she throws herself back into making perfumes, receives tutoring from Ben to help her make up for the schooling she's missed and tries to move on from the grief she still feels over Kristen's death and the hollowness she feels from Caspian's absence.

It took me just a little bit to get into the book, but once I did, I really liked it. Abbey grows a bit more as a character. She tries to move on and convince herself she's fine, she's normal, Caspian had to have been a figment of her imagination. She doesn't feel complete with out him. Abbey continues with her dreams of opening up her own perfume shop and staying in the town she feels a connection to, Sleepy Hollow. When she sees Caspian for the first time in a couple months, her resolve to pretend he didn't exist falls apart. I liked seeing a lot more of Abbey and Caspian together. They are both broken and hurt and they both work to win over each other's hearts and make each other realize that they accept one another for how they are. They resolve to accept their fates and whatever their future holds for them. They both try to make the other feel like they belong in their world, but there's something more sinister going on that may keep Abbey and Caspian from each other.

I really liked getting to know Caspian's character a lot more. He knows how to be quite the romantic. Caspian had me laughing out a loud a few times, as becomes a lot more animated when he's in some same scenes with Ben and Abbey. Though Ben can't seem him, he doesn't hide he's jealous over him. Ben can do things Caspian can't, like touch Abbey. As Abbey and Caspian open up more to each other, they realize that they complete each other in ways no one else can. I liked that, that aspect of their relationship is apart of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. That's not giving anything way, but I like that Jessica reveals more about the Legend of Sleepy Hollow. There's more to the Legend than Abby and Caspian thought.

Jessica wraps up The Haunted with some twists and ends with a cliff hanger. She answered some of my questions I had after reading The Hollow, but with the introduction of some new characters, I'm left questioning what their motives are. With the revelation into who killed Kristen and what role Abbey and Caspian play in The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, I'm left with wanting more.

The Haunted Jessica Verday 9781847384997 Books Reviews

I really enjoyed Jessica Verday's book The Haunted. Her first book of the series was OK. I loved the sleepy hollow theme and the characters were OK so I decided to go for book 2.

Much better! The thing that made me like this book the most are the characters. Abbey and Caspian are both much stronger more likable characters. As Abbey returns home to Sleepy Hollow their relationship definitely blossoms throughout the book to something more intense. Abbey's friendship with Ben also goes through some changes. I don't feel like much was really accomplished plot wise until the last couple of chapters but I enjoyed the writing and dialogue between Abbey and all of the other characters so much that I didn't seem to mind. The last few chapters give you a preview into what book 3 will be about and it sets up book three nicely. I really enjoyed this book and am now eagerly awaiting what Verday comes up with next.
I would like to give this book 4 1/2 stars versus five, because I gave the first book "The Hollows" five stars and this one isn't quite as good, in my opinion. It takes up with Abby almost ready to go back to her life after living with her aunt and being under care by a doctor for her mental problems. See she is started dating this boy, but he is really dead. That can't possibly be reality, right? Oh and to add to that she met the headless horseman and his wife from the famous book. Plus she was having a hard time coping with her best friend's death.

Don't be overwhelmed by the size of this book. It is an unbelievable page turner, even when dealing with the plot set up and characterizations rather then more action based scenes. I finished the entire thing in a few hours.

Caspian is more romantic here, and we really get to see more depth to his character. The two get a little mushy, and I admit to an eye-roll or two as we almost heading into "Twilight" cheesy scenes a time or two. Still it never gets quite that bad and I actually found the romance between Caspian and Abby to be more believable...(you know, once you forget he is a ghost). I enjoyed getting to know more about Caspian's past and what he does on a daily basis since these things were pretty much off limits in the last book. Abby is one of the most enjoyable teenagers I've read about. She has a good head on her shoulders. She works and tries to keep up in school and has a hobby she wants to turn into a profession. She has friends and spends time with them. She is a good yet realistic teenage girl.

Verday does a great job not only with writing believable characters but with dealing with the subject of grief in her stories. The first book was more involved in the grief, and had some beautiful, emotional scenes as Abby deals with Kristen's death. There is still some grief in this novel. Abby mourns not only for Kristen, but for Caspian as well, for the life he will never lead.

The mystery is more prominent in "The Haunted" as we learn more about what happened to Kristen and more about Shades. There are some interesting pieces to the puzzle for us to ponder as we wait until the next book releases. I have to say this cliffhanger was more intense than the first one. This will not be an easy wait.
My daughter is not a reader. I told her that if she found just one book that it would open the flood gate and she would be a reading monster. Well, it happened!!! I am so proud and excited!!! She has earned money for this series, every single book except for the first one which I found at a local retail store. I read the description and took a chance. I bought it and she read it in less than 5 days!!! This was her first novel that she has read!!! She earned money for the rest. She is waiting on the forth book now. She went from never reading to reading each one of these in 5 days a piece. She almost cried when she thought the third was the last one. I highly suggest this whole series to anyone!!! I am getting ready to ready them all myself! Thanks to the author, many wishes to you and I hope my books will be great like yours!
