We have well over 200 books on Wicca (the religion) and Witchcraft (the art and skill), of which I've skimmed most and read several dozen cover-to-cover. THIS BOOK is by far the BEST starting point for Solitaries that I have found (Note: if you're going to be in a coven, this is Not the book for you to start with -- it will interfere with your training). It is very clearly written, and very workable. Good psychology tie-ins as well. The SOLE lack I have found so far is that the author does not adequately explain that Breathing Control is the very first technique you have to master -- it is only mentioned as such. You correct this by contacting a friend who is into Hathayoga AND/OR getting a book such as the (very thin) "Pranayama: Master the Art of Pranayama Breathing and the Ujjayi Breath".
UPDATE: Chapter 10 is an example 7-day Prosperity spell. The previous 9 chapters are everything you need to know, consider, or do to be able to create such a spell that is both effective and appropriate (except the astrology and numerology which, as the author says, are huge in scope and have their own "starter" books -- of which she recommends some).

Practical Solitary Magic Nancy B Watson Murry Hope 9780877288749 Books Reviews
I think that I can add to those that had reviewed this book, one person said that it wasn't for beginners or someone of youth because it was an advanced book, while two others blatently said it was a great place to begin. I think the first review that I mentioned said that it was not a book to begin with because this book is not strictly wiccan, and does not go into any religious background. Thus said this book is as advertised a beginning to magick using mostly the four realm division of Fire/Spirit/Salamander, Air/Mental/slyphs, Water/emotion/undines, Earth/physical/gnomes... in this sense she simplifies activating (I am using a simplistic aproach) the inner child/unconsiousness through exercises and use of elementals. This book is written excellently because it gives not only a simple and uncomplicated and throughly understandable place to begin with out pressure, she also writes it in a way for only spiritual growth of the reader and also writes this with deep moral considerations without beating you over the head constantly of dogma. If you are looking at understanding yourself better while becoming aquanted with elementals this would this book is a great place to begin, but it is somewhat limited in scope. This book is written so it does not rehash or go into any religion so it would be a perfect book for the dedicated of a earth religion as an "intermediate book" if you don't already understand the elemental realm then it would still be perfect since I have not found any other book to relate the elements so wonderfully close to a personal level. I could rant on and on... so I will leave off to also say that this book has a "quiz" or "questionaire" so that you can find the element you are most affinitied to. This to me was more fun then a deep personal exersize and I think should be taken as much.. but if it helps just the better. Blessed be. Now buy this book, since I have bought three over the last three years
It wasn’t for me. I the busy times we live in it’s almost impossible to do what is recommended. As the author said “This isn’t a lazy mans’s craft.” Not exactly word for word but you get the gist. If retired or financially well off & didn't need to work this book is for you!
I love this book. I've read it three times over the last fifteen years. The writing is very approachable, easy to follow, and human. It feels as though she were talking to the reader. This is a welcomed feeling after reading many other books where the writer pays strict attention to voice. And I understand that a lot of Pagan writers write in this approachable manner (we are very democratic after all), yet Nancy's is superbly so.
Why I love this book so much is that it has filler. My mind is constantly at war and peace between ideas and theories. I spend my time in psychology and philosophy and there is nothing that cannot be argued against or for by a philosopher. Skepticism, whether the scientific method or a philosophy is bandied about and at times it is crippling.
Years later I still find parts of this book filling in some small nook in my mind where two disparate ideas rub against each other. Many times over the years I've done a simple ritual of thanks and have found this book rising up in the background of my mind. This book is in my top five books to recommend. Thank you Nancy for putting it out there.
